New Year’s Eve 2024

I considered getting a KFC 21-piece bucket 🍗, large mashed potato and gravy plus a large coleslaw, and a bottle of Coca-Cola for my last meal of the year. When I was younger, I could eat an entire KFC 21-piece bucket in one sitting, but I don’t think I could manage that now (but I like a challenge). I downloaded the KFC app in preparation, selected my local KFC store, and browsed the online pick-up-in-store menu. I even thought about it as I fell asleep last night. I’m surprised I didn’t dream about it like I sometimes dream about vanilla slices.

While showering this morning, I began to think about the greasy, tasty flavours and textures of the chicken, especially the thigh pieces. After stepping out of the shower and drying off, I contemplated the cooking process. At KFC, they use pressure cookers filled with chicken and oil. I assume they no longer use tallow or lard and instead opt for some sort of plant-based seed oil. Then, something clicked in my head, and the desire for the KFC meal faded away.

I chose my usual meal and cooked a steak 🥩 with some butter 🧈 . I didn’t use any plant-based seed oils while preparing it. The steak tasted delicious, and I feel good—much better than I might have felt if I had succumbed to the temptation of KFC.

If you’re going to celebrate the new year, have fun! Happy New Year!

Gary – I don’t believe it – on this New Year’s Eve we actually agree about food (oh, about other matters it is not difficult 🙂 ! KFC and Coke > I cannot think of anything worse in the world . . . and, yes, decades ago, I had managed to eat the greasy fried stuff more than once, so I know what is being spoken about! Am seeing a fair few people tonight but will be having a quiet peaceful look at the Sydney Fireworks at midnight! And – for you . . . may I just hope that what you wish for yourself and those you love will come true . . . health and happiness . . .

I enjoyed reading your plan to get KFC. I’m a bit like that too with ordering KFC or eating out, planning and anticipating beforehand. I haven’t had KFC in years until recently. Now my local KFC has done away with over the counter orders – and instead it’s all order on touch-screen machines. No 21-piece bucket for me but the other day I got popcorn chicken and a piece of chicken breast. Very tasty.

Your steak looks fantastic. I’ve been having steak lately. Happy New Year Gaz 🙂

    Thanks, Mabel.
I miss the flavours and textures of KFC. I wish it was still cooked in animal fat.

I am amazed that you could eat 21 pieces of KFC in a oner! That is 4,900 calories. When I used to eat it I would have three pieces and no chips or sides. When I was pregnant with my younger son, I got a craving for KFC. This involved a car trip to Glasgow at the time. Funnily enough, his favourite meal is chicken. With my older son it was tinned grapefruit slices that I was mad about as well as very strong coffee milk shakes. ( 4 dessert spoons in one go). As a child and adult he had a strong preference for fruity desserts compared to chocolate ones. I sympathise with your dreams about vanilla slices aka meuille fueille. They are a dream. Happy New Year, Gary.

    Dear Katharine, thanks.
When I was younger, my family and friends marvelled at my capacity to eat large volumes. I’m grateful back then there was no YouTube with people demonstrating competitive eating. I may have been sucked in.
I have also been thinking of fruity desserts in the form of a pavlova with passionfruit pulp, pineapple, and mango.
    Happy New Year 😃

    Happy New Year Gary!
I love KFC! I want KFC now!
I prefer KFC over Popeyes. Although I think the Canadian KFC is different than the others.
I had pork hocks tonight. One huge one! Yummy. And sauerkraut soup.
I hope you enjoy your night

We used to get Kentucky Fried Chicken AND pizza takeout on Fridays when I was a kid. Fridays were just the best. We would stuff ourselves silly–and laugh and play games and have so much fun. Cheers–and happy New Year!

Those childhood memories of family takeaway meals I think are largely what drive the desire I have. Often, as an adult, when alone, eating takeaway often results in disappointment.
